Jaguars are the only big cat in North and South America. People sometimes think they are leopards because both animals have spots. However, a jaguars' spots are a little bit different. They often have a dot in the centre.
Jaguars are powerful, solitary hunters and were worshipped as gods by people in the past. Today, there are about 173,000 jaguars left in the world. Most of these can be found in the Amazon rainforest. Deforestation for farming or building has destroyed jaguar habitat. Many jaguars are also killed by ranchers because jaguars may kill farm animals for food. Sometimes they are hunted for their skins and body parts, too. There is illegal trade in jaguar teeth and bones going to China.
deforestation - trees and forests cut down
ranchers - cattle (cow) farmers
illegal - against the law

Jaguars are the biggest cat in the Americas. They are the third biggest cat in the world, after lions and tigers. They can grow up to 67 inches (170 cm) long, including their 31 inch (80cm) long tail. Males can weigh up to 264 pounds (120kg) and females up to 220 pounds (100 kg).
They have the most powerful bite of all the big cats. Their teeth are so strong, that they can bite through the thick skin of caimans and the hard shells of turtles. They can kill animals 3-4 times heavier than themselves.
Jaguars have large, round heads, thick bodies and thick, powerful legs. They hunt by following their prey and ambushing it. They will hide and jump out to kill the animal. Their name 'jaguar' means 'he who kills with one leap'.
Besides having a powerful jump, they are also good at swimming and climbing.
Of course, jaguars are known for their spots. See the chart below so you can tell the difference between a jaguar, a cheetah and a leopard.
Jaguars usually live for 12-15 years.

Jaguars live in Central and South America. They live in rainforests and grasslands, close to lakes, rivers and wetlands.
Jaguars are carnivores. They eat many different kinds of animals, such as capybaras, deer, rabbits, birds or lizards. Unlike other cats, they do not avoid water. They hunt turtles, fish and even caimans.
Jaguars will hunt in the day and at night and travel long distances when hunting.

Female jaguars have one to four babies, called cubs. They are born helpless and blind. Cubs weigh about the same as a loaf of bread when they are born. They grow quickly. By the time they are 2 years old, they are able to live on their own. By that time, males will be 50% heavier than females.
