Writing Resources: A Tourist Leaflet for Hong Kong
Writing a leaflet
Step One: Prewriting
After browsing the website, have students select 4 tour sites to write about and write point form notes about each.
If doing this in groups, students take turns to select a site and brainstorm points for each site together.
Step Two: Drafting
Brainstorm ideas for opening sentences by looking at the website. "Do you love animals?" " Everyone loves Disneyland!"
Students write sentences from their notes. Remember to double space!
Refer to the website to brainstorm ideas for closing sentences.
Step Three: Revising
Add adjectives
Write a noun list on the board and ask students for adjectives to describe them. Ex) yummy seafood / exciting games / fat pandas
Add ideas
Choose a popular site and elicit ideas for things to take. Ex) Repulse Bay: Take your sunglasses / sunhat / beach toys
Note: There may be nothing to take for some destinations
Step Four: Editing
Have students check for capital letters and punctuation as well as any other common problems you see in their work.
When done, students take turns to read their work aloud to their group members. Group members check each other's work, too.
Step Five: Publishing
Print photos for students to glue into their leaflets. Then students copy their sentences onto the leaflet. Two formats are available. If students do not have time to take turns, supply each with a section of the leaflet only and have them glue it onto the template.
