What are grains?
Grains are the seeds of plants. Examples of grains that we eat are rice, corn, wheat and oats. If you eat popcorn, cold cereal, bread or oatmeal, then you are eating a grain product.
Grains and cereals give us ENERGY!
First, it's important to understand the difference between whole grains and refined grains.
Refined grains have parts called the germ and the bran taken away. Examples of refined grains are white flour and white rice. Whole grains don't have the germ and the bran removed, so they are still whole. That's why they're called whole grains.
Whole grains are healthier for you. They have important vitamins and minerals and lots of fibre. The fibre in whole grains helps us go to the toilet. Whole grains are rich in carbohydrates to give us lasting energy. Have you ever eaten a bowl of white rice and felt sleepy afterwards?
Try eating brown rice instead!
Eat fewer refined grains such as biscuits, cakes, pastries, white bread, white rice or instant noodles.
